Some Eliot issues

Joan Montané
Hi,

Some days ago we (Catalan players community) play an important tournament with Eliot as tournament software. Some issues were found when using Eliot.

Note: we use Arbitration (duplicate) mode, using a Master game template, and DISC 2.5.12 [1] (Catalan word list)

Issues:

1. If you need to add manually a move (word and coordinates), because it isn't in list of movements (word-coordinates-score), then it's always computed as invalid move (0 punts). An easy workarround is set 0 as game listing limit, so all moves are computed and listed in move list.

2. Sometimes, after pressing"Search" button, list of movements is empty. No moves are shown. A workarround is type a filter and clear it. Then moves are shown in list of movements.

3. A weird and bad thing (maybe is It related with 1?). In a game 3 players play same movement (word, coordinades, score), but Eliot assings different scores!? One player gets 46 points, and 2 other players get 0 points! I attach game file (Mundial2015-mati-Mancor.eliot). See round 9: PRES 15H

4. Very close to 3. There were moves zeroed incorrectly. See round 7 of 2n attached file (Mundial2015-mati-elPrat.eliot). Round 7, MOCARIA 5D is a valid movement, but computed as zero by Eliot. :(

5. Sometimes, When you create a new game with a Master game Eliot crashes (Catalan dictionary, Arbitration mode). I cann't get you any hint. Eliot rashes and closes automatically.

6. Minor issue. I was unable to change language menus on OSX. Neither Catalan, Spanish or French. On OSX Eliot only shows menus in English. On Linux or Windows I was able to change Eliot language menu.

Issues 1 to 4 are really a problem for us (Catalan community). We are trying to promote duplicate scrabble variant, and Eliot is a great tool, but such issues are a pitty. I dont' know if these issues are shared by other lang/dictionaries, or they are caused by digraphs tiles (French distribution are free of them).

Any help?

Yours,
Joan Montané

Re: Some Eliot issues

Olivier Teuliere
Hi Joan,

Thanks for reporting these issues, I was not aware of them.
Items #3 and #4 seem particularly bad.

December is going to be a very busy month for me, so I may not have
time to fix them before January. I will try though.

In the meantime, could you provide more information about #5 please:
 - Does it crash before or after creating the game?
 - Do you have a way to reproduce it? Maybe with a specific master game?
 - Does it work to "Load the auto-saved game" after the crash?

And about #6, have you tried setting the LANG environment variable
before starting Eliot from the terminal?

Cheers,
Olivier

Hi Joan,

Thanks for reporting these issues, I was not aware of them.
Items #3 and #4 seem particularly bad.

Yes, they are. Fortunately you can open saved games and correct all rounds, but any zero game is can be incorrectly zeroed. So a full review is needed before publishing results, :((((

December is going to be a very busy month for me, so I may not have
time to fix them before January. I will try though.

Thanks for your help. No tournaments are planned in these days, :)

In the meantime, could you provide more information about #5 please:
 - Does it crash before or after creating the game?

It crashes when you clic "OK" button in "Game > New..." dialog

 - Do you have a way to reproduce it? Maybe with a specific master game?

No, I didn't found any way. Same master game can crashes or not. It doesn't seem an issue related with players. OSX and Linux crashes more easilly.

 - Does it work to "Load the auto-saved game" after the crash?

I didn't tried myself :(
A friend of mine says "load auto-saved game" works fine. I'll try it next time.

And about #6, have you tried setting the LANG environment variable
before starting Eliot from the terminal?

Yes, I do, with no luck. It works fine in Windows and Linux, but I was unable to achieve it on OSX. Changing primary system language by UI didn't work either. I'm not an OSX user, may be I've lost some step, but something is wrong, because it doesn't work out-the-box.

Cheers,
Joan Montané

Re: Some Eliot issues

Olivier Teuliere
Hi Joan,

I think I have fixed issues #1 and #2. I will make a new release of
Eliot soon with these fixes, but you should already be able to test
them by building Eliot yourself.

#3 and #4 are probably consequences of #1, so I consider them fixed as
well, until proven otherwise :)

For #5, I need more information to do something about it. If you still
see the crash once in a while, I could give you a debug build of
Eliot, to gather more information about the crash.

As for #6, someone else asked for it on the mailing-list, and I have
been able to reproduce the issue. I will see what I can do, but since
I don't have an easy access to a Mac it may take a while for me to fix
it...

Cheers,
Olivier
