No, it is using NuFW custom protocol to provide a strict authentication.
If you want to play with captive portal, you will find some PHP pages
and module in NuFW sources that will permit you to add captive portal
authentication to a NuFW installation.

Hi Matteo,

As far as I know, nufw does not act as a captive portal, however, it can be
integrated with squid to work as an active portal without too much trouble.

We've setup an active portal type app, where, http traffic is directed to squid.  
If the traffic is authenticated by nufw, then the user does not get prompted to
login, however, if they don't have the nufw client, then they get a login,
which will allow them to authenticate based on IP instead, set to timeout
after a period of time.
