[xen-compile]Is there any patch for dazuko building on SLES10/11?

errik
Dear all,
I want to build Dazuko on SuSE Enterprise Linux 11, but failed.

It seems I need to apply patch first but I can't find any patch for release version of Linux.

Is there any one?

Thanks,
Eric

No, there are no patches available specifically for SLES 11. The
latest stable requires the Linux 2.6.34 kernel. The latest testing
requires the Linux 2.6.36 kernel. SuSE tends to include a lot of
custom kernel changes, so unless you are willing to use a kernel from
kernel.org, you probably won't get DazukoFS up and running very easy.

As far as I know, SLES does include packages of the legacy Dazuko 2.x
versions. That may be an acceptable alternative for you.

Re: [xen-compile]Is there any patch for dazuko building on SLES10/11?

Hi John,

Thanks for your so quick reply.
Actually, I am now planning to use the DazukoFS in a project that runs on SLES11. I am afraid we need to maintain the patch by self.
First, I will study the DazukoFS then I will apply to join your develop community some days later :).

    Some other questions:
   1. Is DazukoFS new version compatible with old versions? For example, if DazukoFS 3.x.1 support 2.6.32 and 3.x.2 adds supports for 2.6.36, will 3.x.2 support 2.6.32?
   2. How many bugs will be fixed in new version on an average? It seems only new kernel version support is added to new DazukoFS version.

Thanks a lot,
Eric

I'm sure there are other people using SLES that would also benefit
from such patches. I would encourage you to post any patches to this
mailing list.

Supporting multiple kernels is a lot of work. The old Dazuko 2.x code
did this. It was a mess, but it worked. For DazukoFS it was decided
that only the latest kernel at the time of the release would be
supported. If other versions should be supported, the idea was to
include patches in the release package to patch DazukoFS for other
versions.

The latest testing version (3.1.4-rc), which should be released soon,
includes several bugfixes and fairly major new features (such as mmap
write support).

With DazukoFS, only "open" events are reported. There is no event type
because every event you receive is an open event.

You may be interested in [0] on the dazuko-help mailing list where Nil
Nik added close events to DazukoFS. Although Nil Nik claims that it is
working correctly, no patches to add this functionality were ever
posted.

Re: [xen-compile]Is there any patch for dazuko building on SLES10/11?

Hi John,

Thanks for your information. Now I have got  the VFS event type (sys_open sys_execve) in dazukofs_open by check the value of
file->f_flags.
Here is another problem we can find from the README  "KNOWN ISSUES" section that is "It is not possible to stack DazukoFS over the root filesystem (/).". My problem is how can I monitor the file access under "/"?

Is there any possibile way to do this under current dazukofs design?

Thanks,
Eric

I encourage you to post a patch with your changes. This may interest
others as well.

It is not possible under the current DazukoFS implementation. It has
been discussed before how this could be implemented. One such example
was posted here:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/dazuko-devel/2008-04/msg00004.html

I have not looked into how much effort such an implementation would
be.

I hope your study also includes using the fanotify interface instead
of DazukoFS. fanotify will provide you all the events you need and it
is about to become an official Linux kernel API.

Re: [xen-compile]Is there any patch for dazuko building on SLES10/11?

Hello John,

Thanks for your information. Fanotify will replace current inotify in kernel.

If I want to use these features, I am afraid I can only choose inotify now. An idea that comes up to solve the "/" issue of dazukofs is that:
1) Use inotify to monity "/"
2) If a directory is created, mount the directory as dazukofs.

This maybe a work around for the known issue of dazukofs.

Thanks again and hope dazukofs can comes in kernel source.

Thanks,
Eric
